Hi Afra!

You did a great job but I think that you can Crystallize this further. You should add more detail to each scene -and I don't know what you want to ask your interviewees so make sure that you bullet your questions.

Here are a few amendment questions:


“Cliques”by Afra Siddiqui
1. EXT. Universal School – Morning - est. shot
-describe what your shot is. Make this detailed! You are selling your entire story in this first scene! Make it interesting.

2. INT. Universal School –Morning
Students coming in (fewer frames) or POV of a student walking in (fewer frames)
then
(more frames so it’s slower) get everyone socializing in their own groups
(should the camera be moving, weaving in and out of groups up and down or should it just be different shots of the different groups)
then
sound of bell ringing-everyone empties the hallways going into their classrooms-the dissolve thing V.O. (Voice-over)interview with Amira Matareyeh
Questions to ask:


-Better -but you need to be specific. Instead of saying fewer or more frames... say slow-mo shots of kids - or sped-up shots, and if you can think of a better way of saying that, then do so!... But be specific with what you want. Treat it this way... you want your words to be chrystal enough to have anyone reading understand what they would need to do to acquire the visuals you created in your mind.


INT. classroom – morning
Montage of the students in classCUT TO:
ext. Universal school-time morning
Turns, focuses on car, zooms out and is inside the principal’s office

-Break it down! Get more specific: What color is the car? What kind of wood for the desk? What is the principle wearing? What does the sky look like outside? Is one of the tires flat? Does the teacher have a funny sign on his or her desk?... we want to know what you have in your brain?!?! really take some ownership and pre-visualise it!
-you are at a great point to start adding some detail here so congratulations!

Questions to ask Principle:


-Bullet the questions.

If the answer has something that can be shown, cut to image of that, then go back to the principal, maybe different view like profile or ?

-make visuals based on your bulleted questions.

Turns, zoom in on sign in office
Get pics of the nov. 5th movement and have v.o. talking about it

Go btw. Images of society and cliques in school
Have leaders at the end, play the end of A Dream by common, v.o. of freedom then credits

I don't have a fancy title or anything and this is just what i have so far, any suggestions because it looks kind of boring and I'm not even sure I'm doing it right

Hey Iman Kids!!

Jeremiah here, wanting to tell you all you did a great job on Saturday!! Your videos are posted right now online: if you go to www.pahnation.com and then click on "theater" there will be a scroll-bar where you can choose Crystal Lake '08. From there a video window will pop open and on the left-hand bottom side you can see the Circus Vision option. Aala, Afra, Amr, Darnitrea, and Nasr's video are all posted so you can show your friends and families! I don't think they posted a winner yet, so I think you guys can still vote for your videos. Sean and I were really impressed with your creativity! Now transfer some of that into your stories! Remember, you can use the blog anytime with any questions about your docs!! We're looking forward to seeing you guys in less than 2 weeks, which is still a ways away. So everyone should be thinking about your stories: Remember!

1) What is your story and your message?
2) How do you want to present your message? What is the Point of View?
3) Who would you want to interview? Do you want to do the Narration yourself?

Hey Aala -

Sean is right... You have a good idea but now you need to think about how you want to Visualize your piece. We know that Drugs is your "Burning Issue" and this is what you want to discuss in your documentary. One thing to think of is "What is your POV? Or Point of View." Meaning, how will the story reveal itself to the audience. Do you know anyone with a drug problem that you truly care about that would be a potential subject or interview? Is there a particular incident in the history of drugs that is important??? One thing you have to take into consideration is that the topic of "Drugs being bad" is a very open and broad subject. There are millions of drugs that affect millions of people in many negative ways. Most recently there has been a big boom in Pharmaceutical Drugs that are being funneled into public use by prescription or other ways. People have died because they were taking too many different prescriptions that dont react well with each other. And even talking about the Pharmaceutical Drugs is still a big topic....Just something to think about. Another thing that might help like Sean said, is thinking about the film you would like to Watch. How would the film you want to make look? The more specific you get the easier it will be to convey your message in a more powerful way. Also, its generally good to use your experiences and memories as a way of fueling your documentary. Finding your perspective (or finding WHO and HOW the story is being told).

1) What do you want to say? Find your VOICE / and your Perspective
2) Who do you want to say it to? Find your Audience


There can be many ways to visualize your piece. Good luck! And feel free to let us know if you are still stuck.
Making your own film is tough ! But rewarding, the developing stages now are key to your documentary later!!

Hey Aala

Thanks for your question. A very good question at that! Knowing where to start is sometimes the hardest part in the journey. Here are some thoughts that might help:

Start from the top. What is the first thing that you want the audience to see in your doc? Often times I try and picture myself in a movie theater looking at MY film on the big screen. The Trailers end and the theater gets quiet... all the sudden the first scene from my film comes up.

What is your first scene? Write it down. Is it outside or inside? INT or EXT?
The "Wanted by the FBI... A Drug Free America" printed on an FBI bag could be a really interesting opening scene. Maybe a slow dolly "PUSH IN" to the FBI bag while some voice over from some of your interview talks about the problems of Drugs in America.

Are you going to narrate?
How many interviews will you have and who are you planning on talking to?
How many locations did you have in mind to shoot at? School? Downtown Chicago? Jail? A drug rehab clinic?


-Think about this and let us know.

I think you should think about crystallizing your message as well. It is a great idea but maybe you could focus on Kids in high school? Or Grade school? Although Drugs obviously plague every spectrum of society in one form or another, your sphere of influence can directly impact your peers. Your message should be directed at kids who might be thinking about trying drugs because of peer pressure or what ever reasons you discover in your interviews.


These are my suggestions. Take it or leave it! AND get writing!

We are excited and you should be too! Writing a script is a really fun task. It requires you to pay close attention to your message. I think that is the hardest part -staying true to your message. But you're all smart and if you are getting stuck, use this blog to get help from all of us. And remember, narrative elements are going to really stylize your piece so use em! What are some of the narrative elements in Joe's Documentary? Do they support his message?

How to outline your story_sort of

Hi all,

Here are a few tricks to help you along the way to making your script. The first important step is to visualize your Doc! Like we have been talking about in the meetings -really look at your Doc, and then we'll turn it into a reality. You can take your essay and change it. Here is an example that you can follow:

Joe is doing his documentary on Bullying in school. There are a lot of ways that he can express what bullying is, who it impacts, how to overcome it, and why it happens. Joe decides that he wants the "Message" of his doc to be, "Why do they Bully and is their hope for change?". Joe hopes that by interviewing Bullies, he will find out what makes them tick (why they are mean to kids) and will hopefully help them realize that there is a better way.

Joe has a great idea but how is he going to Visualize Bullying?! I mean WHOA! There is a lot of stuff to think about! Joe is scared, but it is OK, because he is smart and is going to rough outline his Doc 1st! He outlines it in script format.

Here is what Joe's outline looks like:

02/04/08

1. EXT. SCHOOLYARD - DAY
Montage: Bullies look into the camera and act real mean. They ask for lunch money or make fun of a person directly into the camera. There is the sound of an American Indian was drum. It is scary.

2. INT. HALLWAY AT SCHOOL -DAY
The Bell rings. Kids are walking into class rooms. We still hear the American Indian Drum sound as all the kids disappear into classrooms. All the while all the Bully voices fill the air. They are all yelling mean things while we hear the drum and see and empty hallway. The sound of the Drums and the Yelling gets quiet:

V.O. (Voice-over)
"Bullying is a real problem in schools today. It makes some kids scared to even leave their houses. Why do some kids think they have power over other kids? Is their anything we can do to help them realize that their is a better way?"

CUT TO:
INT. INTERVIEW IN PRINCIPALS OFFICE - DAY
Questions to ask Principle:
1. What is Bullying?
2. What does the school do to stop Bullying?
3. Is their anyway for Bullies, and the kids they make fun, of to get along?

INT. CLASSROOM - DAY
Montage of Kids studying, talking in groups, raising their hands and working with teachers. This will go over the "Talking Head" of the principle.

INT. INTERVIEW WITH BULLY IN CLASSROOM - DAY
Questions to ask Bully:
1. Why does he (or she) Bully?
2. What is his family life like?
3. does he have friends? Who are they?
4. Do they Bully?
5. Does he ever feel bad about being a Bully?

INT. INTERVIEW WITH VICTIM OF A BULLY IN CLASSROOM - DAY
Questions to ask Victim:
1. Does being Bullied effect his schoolwork?
2. What is his personal life like?
3. What does he (or she) get made fun of for?
4. Does the victim also commit the Crime on other kids?
5. How does Bullying make him feel?

NOTES:
1. We will interview 3 Bullies and 3 victims in the same classroom.
2. We will film in the lunch room, library, and after school while kids wait for the bus in order to get extra footage to cut over the "Talking Head".

INT. HALLWAY - END OF SCHOOL DAY
The same hallway as before. The bell rings, all of the kids run out of the classrooms and file past the camera, out the doors to their buses. The hallway is empty except for one Bully and one Victim. They Look at each other... and then shake hands.

FADE TO BLACK
ROLL CREDITS





---This is a good example of a rough outline of a Doc. If you can get your idea to this point, then you can write a proper script, based on the rough outline, and then you will break your script down into its individual shots! Then we can make your Docs! Great to have you all on the blog. Here is a quote from one of my favorite Directors of all time, Stanley Kubrick:


“Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all.”

So run with that.

Documentary is an amazing medium. It gives you a voice. It challenges you to seek the truth and reveal it in a creative way. It is a responsibility. It is taught and earned through hard work. It is fun, scary, difficult, exciting, moving, challenging, fulfilling... and at the end of the day - it will cause people to perceive a certain point of view in a new light - IF DONE WITH HONESTY AND GOOD INTENTIONS!
